Currently pursuing a B.F.A. in Jewelry from the Savannah College of Art and Design, Maya McCormack is influenced by her origins and upbringing.
Jewelry became her passion when she took a gap year in Florence, Italy wanting to learn a skill that has been around since the beginning of time and will continue to be around for the rest of time.
Being Half-Irish and Half-Salvadoran, she has always tried to find her place in both cultures, her artwork reflects the struggle to identify with either.
Her most recent work is driven by reclaiming stereotypes of her identity she is both the designer and maker of her pieces. Focused on tying processes such as computer aided design with traditional fabrication methods to give layers to her work that tie them all together.
Not really interested in having her work be taken too seriously, she enjoys the interaction with potential wearers and how they give pieces their own meaning because after all, they are the ones wearing them.
